April-May 2014
Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival (D-CAF), Cairo
For his first major solo show in Egypt in over ten years, Medrar.TV invited artist and filmmaker Mohamed Abdelkarim to discuss with Hassan Khan the exhibition and development of his practice over the past two decades. Khan is among the major Egyptian contemporary artists, writers and musicians and was jury head at the 54th Venice Biennale. The exhibition was curated by Beth Stryker of the Cairo Lab for Urban Studies, Training and Environmental Research (CLUSTER), and was held at four shopfronts on the Kodak Passageway in downtown Cairo. The shops were re-designed to host 21 works by Khan - many of which are being shown in Egypt for the first time.
In this conversation, Khan and Abdelkarim discuss several video, sculpture, sound, photography and text based works. Khan talks about his sources of inspiration and how he develops them into the final artworks that build on different visual, sound and textual languages, common in popular culture.
